When we are faced with sinful desires or overcoming them, sometimes we are faced with lies, excuses or even a mental battle that may result us into falling into temptation. This final post in this Lust Love Series identifies some of the lies/excuses that sinful desires tell you, Joshua Harris in his book called Sex Is Not The Problem (Lust Is) came up with scriptural weapons to fight them back with. Which lie are you familiar with?
Lust is no big deal
Truth: “For lust is a shameful sin, a crime that should be punished. It is a devastating fire that destroys to hell. It would wipe out everything I own” (Job 31:11-12)
A little sinful fantasising won’t hurt.
Truth: “To set the mind on flesh is death, but to set mind on the Spirit is life and death and peace.” (Romans 8:6)
“Do not be decieved: God is mocked for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but one who sows to the Spirit reap eternal life” Galatians 6:7-8)
I can’t control my sex drive
Truth: It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you (1 Thessalonians 4:3-6).
Looking at pornographic pictures won’t effect me.
Truth: It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honourable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you (Proverbs 25-27).
I will set before my eyes no vile thing (Psalm 101:3).
I won’t experience any consequences for indulging in my lust.
Truth: “So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12).
“The Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son” (Hebrews 12:6)
After desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death (James 1:15).
People get away with adultery
Truth: “ For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave” (Proverbs 5:3-5).
Fulfilling my lust will satisfy me.
Truth: “ I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD (Lamentations 2:24-26).
Too much purity will keep me from seeing and enjoying beauty.
Truth: Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God (Matthew 5:8).
For the LORD is righteous, he loves justice; upright men will see his face (Psalm 11:7).
Your eyes will see the king in his beauty and view a land that stretches afar (Isaiah 33:17).
I pray that as you engrave these words in your heart you will not lose a battle to the flesh in Jesus name.
